Thank you very much for sorting the Bovidae!
[edit]Dear Cart, it was a great idea to sort the overcrowded section Artiodactyla#Family : Bovidae (Bovids) by genus! Many of the new genus subsections have a lot of members themselves, so this is a very helpful edit. Thank you very much, – Aristeas (talk) 07:23, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
“Mounted specimens” subsections on Lepidoptera pages
[edit]Dear Cart, the Lepidoptera gallery page and the new Lepidoptera/Papilionoidea gallery page both feature a little speciality: on each of them a section (the Nymphalidae and Sphingidae) is split into two separate <gallery>...</gallery>
elements, the second one labelled as “Mounted specimens”.
One the one hand this is a good idea, as the photos of mounted specimens are quite different from the ones of living individuals. On the other hand the label is simple bold text, so it cannot be addressed with the gallery link of a nomination and the bot will always sort a new FP just in one of the two <gallery>
elements (into which one depends on the bot ;–). What do you think?
- Should we just convert that bold “Mounted specimens” into a new level 3 subheading:
=== Mounted specimens of Nymphalidae ===
resp.=== Mounted specimens of Sphingidae ===
? Then one could use this in the gallery link.
- Or do yo think that sooner or later we should better split the crowded long family sections on these pages, especially the veeery long section for the Nymphalidae, into subsections for the different genera? Then it would probably be better just to drop the separation of mounted specimens.
All the best, – Aristeas (talk) 07:41, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- Aristeas, I have to get back to you on this tomorrow or so. Unfortunately, I have very little time for Commons today. Best, --Cart (talk) 10:27, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- Sorry, Cart, I did not mean that I would expect an answer to this now or soon (but I see that my question reads so, therefore sorry). I just wanted to, ahem, note down this “speciality” before I forget about it, because it is yet another item for our revision of the gallery pages. Just think about this whenever you want! And, of course, with #2 I do not mean that I want you to split the long family sections – you have just completed the cleaning of the Augean stables of Bovidae –, I just wonder which solution we favour for the future. If we decide to split the sections into subsection, I can take this one. All the best, – Aristeas (talk) 11:52, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- Aristeas, it's ok. I'm happy to do whatever needs to be done, I just have so much else that needs to be done today after my "little adventure" some days ago, I can't even think about formulating a good answer as my thoughts are elsewhere. I'll be back. ;-) --Cart (talk) 11:57, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

Okey then Aristeas, the mundane chores are done. I did get some time to think about your questions while I did the cleaning, laundry, and the other boring things that don't get done when you live alone and get sent to the ER. ;-) And as usual when I think, new things keep popping up. So for starters could you please check with your program so I haven't mislaid any files when I fixed up Food and drink.
Now to your question: I fixed the Lepidoptera pages before we started the discussions about FPCBot, and that sorting "seemed like a good idea at the time". Of course, things change when we get wiser, and now those sub-sections are crap. Anyway, the sorting was based on the fact that in the galleries we tend to keep living and dead things separate. If plants are alive we find them in Plants galleries, and when they die or are cut off they are placed in Dead plants or Food. Same with animals. Living animals go to Animals galleries, but dead are found in Food, Bones and fossils or Shells. And we put dead people in Traditions instead of Portraits. There are exceptions and the lines are not rigid, but it's the general idea. I also thought that we were sort of passed the dead butterflies and moths era, but it still seems popular and growing.
With both Lepidoptera pages growing so fast these days, we need to keep them slim and uncomplicated. I suggest we (I) create a new gallery for "Commons:Featured pictures/Animals/Arthropods/Lepidoptera/Mounted" were we can put both dead Lepidoptera and Papilionoidea and sort them according to families and genus (whatever is best) and then both live and dead galleries can grow as much as they want. What do you think of this? --Cart (talk) 19:58, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
